Open source is growing by leaps and bounds in the current market; however, even going back through the last few years we can find evidence of open source success. PC World gives lots of support for open source adoption in the business world in its 2010 article, “10 Reasons Open Source Is Good for Business.”
The author begins:
With the many business and government organizations that now use open source software such as Linux, it’s becoming increasingly clear that price is not the only advantage such software holds. If it were, companies that adopted it during the Great Recession would surely have switched back to the expensive proprietary stuff as soon as conditions began to ease, and that’s clearly not the case. Rather, free and open source software (FOSS) holds numerous other compelling advantages for businesses, some of them even more valuable than the software’s low price.
The author goes on to state many reasons above and beyond cost effectiveness that contribute to the open source surge. Reasons include: security benefits, quality, flexibility, interoperability, and support options among others.
LucidWorks is an industry leader in open source search, boasting all of the benefits above among others. With LucidWorks, users have all of the benefits of open source technology, but also the support and training available from a trusted company. It is all-around good situation for enterprises, and one that continues to get good reviews from users.
